Hi, I'm Dr Lucy Wilcoxon

I am a Clinical Psychologist and mum of two. I am passionate about supporting individuals, children and families experiencing challenges

Since embarking on my career path to being a Clinical Psychologist - I have worked in a variety of NHS, school and social care settings. I have specialist interests in relational practice, thinking about relationships with others (e.g. parent-child relationship) and relationships with ourselves.

Alongside The Parenthood Psychology Practice - I work in an NHS Maternal Mental Health Service, supporting women and birthing people in the early stages of parenthood; through birth trauma, loss of a pregnancy or death of a baby, a fear of childbirth or separation from their child.

I have previously worked in Children Social Care Services, supporting families through difficult relational challenges, children with additional needs, parents with their own mental health needs, and trauma histories.

What is a Clinical Psychologist?

Choosing the right professional to support you, or your child, is an important part of the process for getting effective support. It can be difficult to know the difference between the wide variety of professionals available. I can explain what a Clinical Psychologist can offer.

My approach...

Relationships form the basis of the way that I work; I place huge value on developing a secure, compassionate and connected relationship at the forefront.

I work in a needs led way, driven by formulation - this means we work together to make sense of your needs, and develop a plan to meet them. My values lie in ensuring you have a professional, evidence based and effective intervention to meet your needs.

My clinical practice is grounded in attachment, trauma and relational practice. I use a holistic approach to therapeutic work, drawing on principles from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Attachment and relational practice, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) mentalisation based approaches, systemic practice and trauma informed care.

My work is grounded in principles of curiosity, collaboration and connection and I bring a sense of playfulness and fun to the way I practice.

Clinical Psychologists are highly trained to work with individuals with a range of mental health presentations, and needs across the lifespan. That means we are taught about the psychological development of individuals throughout pregnancy, childhood, adulthood and later life. We are specifically trained in thinking holistically, and therefore take into account a wide range of factors that might be influencing an individuals psychological health.

Clinical Psychologists practice is grounded in scientific evidence base, which means we work hard to remain up to date with the latest research and practice and therefore offer the best care for the individuals we work with. We use this in our work to guide our formulation created alongside you.

Alongside individual work, we are trained to work with individuals, families and staff groups/communities and wider systems to bring about effective change. We support multidisciplinary colleagues, and have a focus on working collaboratively to ensure thoughtful and compassionate care.
